I watched a program called Black in America: Relcaiming the Dream last night. It was shown on CNN which had a collaboration with Essence. The program focused not only on problems in America for African Americans, but how to potentially fix or tend to those problems as well. While every comment, argument and conversation was crucial, one notion sparked many thoughts in my mind. There was a young woman, about 20 years old who contracted HIV/AIDS from her longtime boyfriend. She said that she caught it from him when they were having unprotected sex. She mentioned that he knew that he had the disease but didn’t inform her of it until she was diagnosed. One night, (I think it was after they finished having sex) he told her that he didn’t use a condom, as he usually does.  She told the reporter that when she heard him say this, she felt happy and very loved.

I had to stop right there…. I don’t think I understand why she thought what she did… well maybe I do. All through my high school “career” I was taught that “safe” sex was the way to go. But when I graduated and entered college, some of my friends mentioned that sex was better without a condom and that if the guy didn’t want to use a condom, that meant that he Loved you. Uh-oh! I used the dreaded L-word (the other L-word). That’s just what the belief of many of my friends was. Maybe the young lady on the CNN program thought the same way.

I personally don’t think that it’s acceptable to have unprotected sex… unless you are both tested (assuming that I am speaking about couples- but maybe there are more that just two of you) and you live together, or are married, and the sex activities are only being performed by the two of you- or three or four, etc…
